New Trees For Malting House and Narrow Street
Trees For Cities is working with Tower Hamlets Council to plant new trees, hedgerow, and flowers around Barley Mow Estate. The aim is to bring more visual interest to the area, making it a more pleasant place to live, helping nature thrive and creating greener spaces that everyone can enjoy.

Why are we planting here?
Trees for Cities will be planting trees to introduce more seasonal colour and improve biodiversity in the area. We have prepared plans which you can view in the below.
The plan includes up to 6 trees in the green space near Malting House which includes an Elm tree providing beautiful Autumn colour accompanied by bulbs to bloom in Springtime.
Along the pathways next to Barleycorn House (between the playground and Narrow street), we are proposing up to 6 trees which include the Lavallee hawthorn for its Spring blossom followed by red berries and Ornamental pear trees for their beautiful Autumn colour. We are suggesting to plant a small hedgerow made up of a mix of species. The aim is to provide additional protection and help reduce pollution from the street. In time, it will also provide a rich habitat for small wildlife.
We hope these trees will be a welcome improvement to the estate and provide lasting benefits to the environment and the local community. We hope you can join us in shaping the design and planting the trees in early winter.
Have Your Say
We are now running a community consultation to seek feedback before plans are finalised. We would like to identify resident priorities and preferences around the species selection of the plants, wildlife habitat creation, and other greening features planned for these areas.
