How You Can Take Local Climate Action

In the face of our rapidly changing climate, it's often hard to imagine how anything you can do will make a difference. Well, we're here to tell you it does - and here's how.
Think Local
We've just come out of the hottest summer on record in the UK. Climate change is affecting us in the here and now, and everyone needs to play a part if we're to ensure our towns and cities are liveable in the future.
Climate action will look different for everyone, but we're huge advocates for local action - no matter how big or small. By supporting the communities we live in and the nature we share it with, we can help make our neighbourhoods more resilient to climate change, which in turn supports the bigger picture.
Let's look at different ways you can get involved.
Get Stuck In
One way you can support nature where you live is by getting your hands dirty! Find a local community greening group and volunteer your time or skills.
Unsure how to find them? Parks often have 'Friends of' volunteer groups, or try reaching out on your local Facebook group, asking about local initiatives. Your council may also have a volunteer section on their website.
We also run tree planting events you can get stuck in with. Sign up to our mailing list and provide your postcode to be the first to hear about opportunities near you.
Donate To Green Missions
It may sound obvious, but if you can't volunteer your time but have money to donate, then supporting a charity is an amazing way to make a difference.
Even better than a one-off donation is becoming a regular donor. This steady stream of income helps charities like us plan for future projects. Your gift goes a long way!
Sponsor More Trees
Did you know you can donate towards more trees in your streets and parks? Council tree budgets only go so far, but with tree sponsorships, that budget can be stretched further. Trees for Streets, our tree sponsorship scheme, works alongside councils across the UK to support individuals, businesses and community groups to plant more trees where they live.
Head over to the Trees for Streets website to find out more about becoming a tree sponsor, or access support on how to fundraise with your community.

Become A Tree Guardian
Our concrete jungles are tough environments for trees; they need our support. During the warmer months, you can help out new trees by watering them once a week. You can even become an official Watering Champion!
If you see an urban tree struggling, such as old supports cutting into the trunk or other signs of struggle, such as wilting leaves, you can report it to your local council via their website, or submit it on Fix My Street.
Micro-Volunteering
If you're short on time and money, there's still plenty you can do to take action against climate change.
- Follow environmental activists and charities (like us!) on social media and share their posts, helping create awareness of their mission.
- Litter pick on your street, you never know who you might inspire!
- Take part in a citizen science project, like our Urban Tree Watch, or report nature sightings on iNaturalist.
