Tree Planting at The Closes
Trees for Cities worked with Hillingdon Council in 2024 to plant new trees on The Closes Recreation Ground in West Drayton. The new trees create woodland areas, increase canopy cover, and add to the biodiversity value and visual interest of the site.

Why did we plant trees here?
The Closes is a park of approximately 9.5ha in the ward of West Drayton. The north side of the site is largely amenity grassland, and is used for recreation. There is a wilder section in the southwest corner with a relaxed mowing regime, new trees and a natural regeneration of trees. The park has a number of existing mature trees which are largely similar in age. The site is bordered by St George’s Meadows, a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation, to the west.
The new trees planted increase the biodiversity value of the site by adding woodland compartments with varying age structure and densities to create a diverse woodland habitat that complement areas of natural regeneration. Larger trees planted along avenues will continue shaded walkways, and the orchard will provide fruit for local people and animals to enjoy.
Thank you for planting trees with us!
In November 2024, school groups and volunteers joined us at workshops and a Community Planting Day to plant the new trees and create a greener space for the local community.
