Tree Maintenance Training Session at Northolt Park
Trees for Cities is pleased to offer a free introductory woodland maintenance training session at Northolt Park as part of our ongoing work with Ealing Council.
Background
In 2013, Trees for Cities planted 10,000 trees in Northolt Park with the help of volunteers. The woodland areas were created with birch, hornbeam, alder, poplar, crab apple, cherry, rowan, field maple and hazel trees.
When the trees were planted, most were no taller than 80cm. Ten years later, the trees have established successfully, and it is now time for light intervention and general maintenance of the site to increase species diversity and maintain the overall health of the woodland. Find out more about our woodland projects in Northolt Park.

Session details
Date and time: Saturday 28th September from 11-3pm
Location: Northolt Park, Racecourse Estate (1 Ascot Cl, Northolt UB5 4EH)
We will be “thinning” the woodland, (cutting back undergrowth and coppicing trees that have become too dominant) which creates a more favourable environment for the trees to thrive. Trees for Cities staff will give insight to the background of woodland planning and design, species selection and identification, as well as strategies for ongoing maintenance of the woodland.
This hands-on training will involve using hand tools such as loppers, shears, and secateurs and piling the cuttings to create further habitat. Trees for Cities staff will provide guidance on what to do and how to safely use the tools provided.
The training will begin promptly at 11am and there will be breaks throughout the session to rest and have lunch/snacks. Please bring a refillable water bottle and a packed lunch as food will not be provided. Drinking water, a handwashing station, and toilet facilities (portaloos) will be available on site.
