Tree Planting in Victoria Park

In early 2023 Trees for Cities worked with Tower Hamlets Council and American Express to plant one hundred and six new standard trees around Victoria Park.

Later on that year, we returned to the park to plant a further twenty trees around the park with schools and community groups, including five trees kindly donated by the Royal Warrant Holders Association to celebrate the King's Coronation.

What have we planted in Victoria Park?

In early 2023 Trees for Cities with Tower Hamlets Council and the Forestry Commission to plant 106 brand-new trees in Victoria Park.

One of the aims of this project was to preserve the character of Victoria Park for years to come. To do this we have planted 42 new London Plane trees along the avenues on the eastern edge of the park, As these reach maturity they will complement and eventually replace the existing London Plane Trees.

We also planted various ornamental trees including Flowering Cherry, Wild Cherry, Fern Leaf Beech, English Walnut, Mulberry, Field Maple and Strawberry Tree. These trees will further diversify the tree stock in the park and ensure there are beautiful and distinctive trees in the park for years to come.

We have planted a small number of trees in the central section of the park including a Deodar Cedar near the East Lake which will grow into one of the most notable trees in the park. We are also planting three disease-resistant Elm Trees in this area which will encourage the rare White Hairstreak butterfly to the park.

In the park's western section bordered by the canal and Grove Road, we have planted 39 trees amongst the existing groups of mature trees. The species we will put here will include Dawn Redwood, Indian Bean Tree, Red Maple, Foxglove Tree and Scots Pine among others

A large number of the Trees, including most of the London Plane Trees, were planted by local people on our community tree planting day.

For the Additional planting in Autumn 2024, we planted 20 more trees including Cherry Trees, Birch trees and an Empress Tree.

We engaged with local school groups to do some of the planting and some of our cooperate partners have kindly donated their time to help plant the trees
